Close the Gap Key Messages:
- By 2011, the NTFB will distribute 50 million meals to Close the Gap on hunger. Close the Gap is a three-year initiative to close the gap between what people in poverty need (3 meals/day) and what they currently access.
- The current need is over 1 billion pounds of food, equivalent to 800 million meals.
- Currently there is a 29 million meal gap for people living at or below the federal poverty level.
- The North Texas Food Bank will close the gap through two key initiatives – increasing distribution and expanding the Food Stamp Outreach program. Agency infrastructure will be strengthened, underserved areas will receive additional support, and more nutritious product will be available.
- The NTFB passionately pursues a hunger-free community.
- The NTFB serves 260 Member Agencies in 13 North Texas counties.
- The NTFB provides food to 917 feeding and education programs.
- Last year, the NTFB distributed 26 million meals.
- Every $1 = 5 meals.
- Out of every $1 donated, 97 cents goes directly to hunger relief.
- Forty percent of the households served through the NTFB feeding and education programs have at least one employed adult. They are known as the “working hungry.”
- *Last year, an average of 50,000 families were served each month.
- *Last year, an average of 435,000 meals/snacks were served each month.
- The NTFB ranks 1st in Texas for pounds distributed to nonprofit organizations feeding the hungry.
- The NTFB is consistently ranked as one of the top nonprofit organizations in Dallas/Fort Worth.
- The NTFB has received a Four- Star rating from Charity Navigator for 2 consecutive years.
- The NTFB was ranked 8th in the nation among the 204 Feeding America’s food banks based on distribution.
